History of the Shipyard

Morska Stocznia Remontowa, as a plc, has been operating since November 1990, however its very beginning dates back to the early 1970s.

In 1968 Zjednoczenie Morskich Stoczni Remontowych (ZMSR) [the Association of the Marine Repair Yards] appointed a team to deal with the issues of a repair yard to be build at Świnoujście. That enterprise under its business name Morska Stocznia Remontowa w Świnoujściu i.e. the Marine Repair Yard in Świnoujście, was established by Directive No. 45 of the Minister of Shipping dated 4th August 1970, and entered in the business register in section A under registration No. 5821 on 21st December 1970, and thus incorporated. Morska Stocznia Remontowa in Świnoujście was formed based upon a part of the assets and people taken over from Armatorski Ośrodek Remontowy (AOR) [the Shipowners’ Repair Centre] of Przedsiębiorstwo Połowów Dalekomorskich i Usług Rybackich (PPDiUR) „Odra” [Deep Sea Fishing Company „Odra”].

The first production assets of MSR constituted:- a 3,500t dry dock, a quay ca. 45m long and production shops with an area of ca. 1,400m2 and 190 staff and personnel. The results of the 1st stage of the construction of the Yard finalized in the mid-1970s were as follows:- 2 off floating docks (3,500t and 4,500t), a repair quay 310m long; the production premises with an area of ca. 7,500m2; the number of employees ca. 1,200. The Yard was prepared to repair small and medium size merchant vessels, fishing fleet and to provide other services that were compatible with its scope of technological equipment. At that time 55 per cent of the production was exported, which proved a good quality of the work being done. In the years 1984-1992 the repair quay was elongated up to ca. 700m, and equipped further with power and technological systems; a testing station was erected and the company-wide infrastructure and networks were extended.

In the years 1982-1987 the Yard employed 1,200-1,400 staff and personnel. The collapse of the market in East Germany experienced in 1989-1990 resulted in the need to reduce own workforce to ca. 550 in the year 1993. On 31st October 1990 MSR was restructured to a one-person plc of the State Treasury. The relevant entry in the commercial register occurred on 6th November 1991.
